Tell us something about yourself. What is your niche? Why did you start your business?

A creative mind is a terrible thing to waste. During the uncertainty of 2020, the one thing that I can do at home is made items people can use during the pandemic. I’ve always been very creative I love the challenge of a new project and Etsy has allowed me the opportunity to work from home.

What type of products do you sell? How does your manufacturing process look like?

Currently, I’m selling 100% cotton face masks and hand-beaded glass mask lanyards. Our lives have all been changed during the pandemic. My products are all made at my home by my own two hands in a clean pet free environment. I hope my creations help buyers feel safe & stylish!

What are some challenging aspects of your business? How did you overcome them?

At first, materials were quite limited so I was using bed sheets for masks. Now that fabric is more readily available there are so many more options.

What do you enjoy most about being an entrepreneur? What’s the hardest about it?

I enjoy working for myself, designing, find ways to improve, and making things for people all over the world. Finding ways to stand out from the rest is difficult at times but I make sure I take the time to thank every single customer.

What are some beginner mistakes you made? What advice or words of inspiration would you like to share?

There is no such thing as perfect especially when you’re just starting out it’s a learning process and mistakes need to be made. I forgot an item in one of my very first orders and I felt that I had failed miserably! The customer reaches out to me my response was just pure honesty I fixed the problem and she was very happy. She even came back and placed two additional orders. Be yourself, admit your mistakes, remember that you’re always learning & always growing. Be kind always. Don’t strive for perfection just be real!

What inspires you while designing and/or creating new products.

The music’s the best way to add structure in the midst of chaos. I’m a sucker for some classical music when I’m really in the zone especially Bach.

How did you get the background and skills necessary to run this type of business?

Working in the restaurant industry for over 20 years gave me all of the tools I’ll ever need for customer service. I’ve tried everything from photography to miniature dollhouse furniture. Never give up and you can’t go wrong.

What are some of the most effective ways in terms of marketing products to your customers?

Take a lot of photos to use your social media platform to stay on the minds of your buyers. Etsy has many opportunities to manage ads for you which is a fantastic way to build sales.

What would you say are the key elements for starting and running a successful online business?

Stay organized, show gratitude, stand behind your brand, and ship as fast as possible.

How do you personally define business success? Is it money? Freedom? Influence? Creative expression and innovation? Something else?

Doing something creative every day is cleansing for the soul. It’s also something I can share that I love doing.

Describe your day-to-day operation. How do you manage your time?

In the morning I print any new orders as well as the shipping labels and prepare what I need to ship them. Typically I go to the post office at noon then again at 5:00. I set up my design station and pack the orders throughout the day. Etsy does a great job with their website open on my laptop and the app on my phone it’s easy to stay on track. It’s not a 9-5 job at all if someone has a question at 1 am and I’m awake I’ll always answer!

How do you plan on growing your business? What is the biggest impact on your profitability?

Right now it’s fairly small but I’d love to grow to include other items that keep people close while social distancing. The biggest impact on profitability is making sure the pricing is right and marketing to the correct audience.
